A history of the Ludhiana CMC Board in the US and CMC Ludhiana hospital and colleges.
1875 – 1881
The Greenfield sisters arrive in India.
In 1875, Rose Greenfield arrives in India. 6 years later in 1881, her sister, Kay Greenfield, joins her.
1889
Ludhiana School of Nursing opens.
The Greenfield sisters open the Ludhiana School of Nursing, the first unit of what would later become CMC Ludhiana.
1891

Dr. Edith Mary Brown arrives in India
Dr. (later Dame) Edith M. Brown arrives in Ludhiana.
1893
North India School of Medicine for Christian Women opens.
The North India School of Medicine for Christian Women (name later changed to Women’s Christian Medical College) is opened, led by Dame Brown.
1899
First batch graduates.
First four students graduate from the school with 100% success on their exams.
1932
Dr. Edith Brown becomes a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
1939
CMC Ludhiana USA Board founded.
The US Board began in 1939 as means of supporting the work in Ludhiana.
1941

Dame Edith Brown retires.
After over 50 years of service, Dame Brown retires to Kashmir.
1947
CMC Ludhiana helps fight cholera epidemic.
Dr. Carl Taylor, accompanied by Dr. Don Rice and Dr. Elmer Whitcomb, work in refugee camps at India-Pakistan border to stem cholera epidemic. Bishop Picket assisted by getting supplies.
1949
Health Visitor’s School opens.
Health Visitor’s School is opened by Raj Kumari Amrit Kaur.
1951
Department of Social and Preventative Medicine opens.
Department of Social and Preventative Medicine is founded by Dr. Carl Taylor.
1952
Renamed to Christian Medical College.
Name changed to Christian Medical College to allow male students to be admitted.
1953
CMC becomes co-ed, gets upgraded to MBBS status.
With the first 4 male students admitted, it becomes co-educational. CMC Ludhiana is upgraded to MBBS status, and becomes affiliated with Punjab University.
1954

Dr. Forrest Cary Eggleston arrives in Ludhiana.
The future Department head and Director of CMC Ludhiana arrived in Ludhiana with his wife and two children.
1955
Dr. Eggleston establishes Department of Surgery.
1956

Dame Edith Brown dies December 6th.
1959


Kaz Kawata, supervises end of Edith Brown Hospital construction
1960s
Department of Physiotherapy is founded.
1965

Charles Reynolds becomes Executive Director of the Board.
CMC Ludhiana USA is officially incorporated.
1967
College of Nursing hostel opens.
1969

Department of Plastics and Reconstructive Surgery founded.
The Department of Plastics and Reconstructive Surgery is founded by Dr. T. C. Feierabend in 1969.
1973

School of Nursing is elevated to College status.
1982
Dr. F. C. “Boss” Eggleston becomes the Director of CMC Ludhiana.
He was Director until 1986.
1992

Dental College opens.
1995

Rev. Roberta Jones becomes Executive Director of the Board.
2006
College of Physiotherapy is established.
BPT Certification is offered.
2007
Institute of Allied Health Sciences is established.
2012

Rev. Max Marble becomes Executive Director of the Board.
2018
CMC Ludhiana begins work with Global Surgery Collaborative.
2018
Dr. Sarjit Gill (Batch of ’53) establishes the Eggleston Trust.
This trust would fund a yearly oration.
2019

Dr. Cate Whitcomb becomes Executive Director of the Board.
2021
Covid Ward opens.
Funded by the Ludhiana Police Public Foundation, this ward was built to help CMC care for more Covid-19 patients.
2022

First Eggleston Oration occurs.
They now occur on an annual basis.
2025

Dr. Bhatti leads flood relief team.
In response to the heavy floods in September 2025, Dr. Bhatti, a Professor of Pediatric Surgery at CMC Ludhiana, led a medical team to work with soldiers to provide flood relief.
2025

CMC Medical Camps recognized.
In December, CMC was recognized for their many medical camps they organize to provide healthcare to underserved communities.
